Our place is situated on G T Road. It’s a long road and we are just one of many businesses along the stretch. The traffic is mostly big trucks passing through, which makes the whole building shake a little bit sometimes. We have a workshop area where all the machines are kept. It’s quite loud when everything is running at the same time. We have to shout a bit to be heard over the metal sounds. Most of us wear overalls that have seen better days. There are oil stains on the floor that no amount of scrubbing will ever get out. We have a small office section too, but it’s mostly just for keeping the ledgers and answering the one phone we have. The roof is made of tin, so when it rains, it sounds like a drum set is playing over our heads. We usually take our breaks outside under the shade of the overhang. It’s nice to get a bit of fresh air, even if it’s just the exhaust from the road. We’ve been working with these machines for a long time. They are old but they still run fine if you know how to treat them. We don’t have a lot of fancy technology here. It’s more about knowing the equipment and doing the work. It’s a simple life on G T Road, just staying busy and getting the orders out.
