Suchitra Sarees

Out here in Teliamura, life moves at its own pace. Suchitra Sarees is a small spot in Agartala where we keep things pretty simple. Most of the day is spent handling sarees, checking the borders, and making sure the pleats look right when we show them to someone. We don’t have a massive showroom with bright lights. It’s more of a place where you can sit down on the floor cushions and take your time looking at the colors. We get a lot of women coming in after they’ve finished their marketing for the day, just to see if anything new has arrived. Sometimes we have tea and just talk about local news while we work. The rainy season can be tough because the dampness gets into everything, so we have to be careful with the silk and cotton. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy bundles and organizing the shelves so we can actually find what someone is asking for. We’ve learned over the years what the local families like for weddings or for just going to the temple. It’s not about being fancy, just about having a good variety of stuff that people around here actually want to wear. We keep the shop open until late evening, usually closing up once the street gets quiet. It’s a steady kind of life, and we’re used to the routine of it all now.
