Electronic De Machines

If you head down Pataudi Road and turn into Kadipur Industrial Area, you’ll eventually find Gali No 8. We’re in Lane 2. It’s not the easiest place to find if it’s your first time, as the lanes all kind of look the same after a while. Electronic De Machines is where we spend our ten-hour shifts. The air always smells a bit like metal and oil, which I guess is normal for an industrial area. There’s usually a lot of noise from the neighboring units too, lots of banging and grinding sounds. It’s loud, but you stop noticing it after the first hour. The floor is concrete and stays pretty cold in the winter months, so we usually wear thick boots. We have a small area cleared out for sitting during lunch, but mostly we’re on our feet. The light coming through the high windows is usually dusty. It’s hard work, and by the time we lock up at night, everyone is pretty tired. We don’t really do much talking during the busy hours, we just focus on the machines and making sure everything is running like it’s supposed to. It’s a practical setup. No bells or whistles, just the equipment and the space we need to operate. The lane gets pretty muddy when it rains, so we spend a lot of time cleaning the entryway. We just try to keep things moving and get the jobs finished before the sun goes down.
