Working out of Khari Baoli at Katra Tobacco is quite something. If you know the area, you know how narrow the lanes are and how the air smells like spices and chemicals mixed together. Our place at 2068 is tucked away in one of those old buildings. We spend our mornings checking the stock and talking to the loaders. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and moving drums around. The walls are a bit dusty and the stairs are steep. It’s been this way for a long time. Most of our day is spent on the phone or writing out receipts on those carbon paper pads. We don't have a showroom or anything like that. It’s just a warehouse and a small office space where we sit. Dealing with the traffic in Khari Baoli is the hardest part of the job. You have to time everything perfectly or the trucks get stuck for hours. We see a lot of regular traders who have been coming to this Katra for generations. It’s a tight-knit community even if it looks chaotic to someone from outside. We just keep our heads down and get the orders out. There’s always some new regulation or some paperwork to finish. It’s hard work, but it’s what we’ve always done here in this part of Delhi. The wooden desk in the office is almost as old as the building itself.
