Sri Shiva Arecanuts

We are based out of Anupinakatte in Shimoga. This part of Karnataka is well known for arecanuts, so it made sense for us to be right here. Sri Shiva Arecanuts is basically a local setup where we handle the sorting and the bags. It’s a bit of a rustic operation. You won't find any fancy suits or high-rise offices here. It’s more about the smell of the crops and the sound of trucks coming and going. The weather in Shimoga really dictates how our day goes. If it’s raining hard, things slow down. If it’s sunny, we’re busy from morning until late at night. We’ve lived here a long time, so we know the farmers and the other traders in the market. It’s a tight community. We don’t really use much technology beyond what’s necessary for the accounts. Most of our business is done through handshakes and phone calls. We aren't trying to change the world; we just want to make sure the quality is decent and the prices are fair for everyone involved. Sometimes the warehouse gets a bit cluttered, but we know where everything is. When the harvest season hits, it’s all hands on deck and we barely have time to sit down for a meal. My cousins often come over to help with the heavy lifting. We’ve been in Anupinakatte so long that we can tell the quality of the nuts just by the feel. It’s a straightforward way of working.
