Mayel Crafts

Mayel Crafts is located inside the Tibetan Mission Compound in Kalimpong. It’s a beautiful part of West Bengal, though the roads can be a bit steep and winding to get up here. We work on various local crafts and handmade items that represent the culture of the hills. The workshop is usually filled with the smell of wood or fabric, depending on what project is currently on the table. We aren't a massive factory. It’s a small group of us who enjoy making things with our hands. The light in the compound is quite nice during the daytime, which helps with the detailed work we do. Sometimes when the monsoon rain hits Kalimpong, it gets very loud on the roof and we have to pause our conversations. We pack everything ourselves right here in the workspace. Our address is easy to find if you know the mission area. We don't spend much time on fancy websites or big corporate meetings. Most of our day is spent actually working on the crafts or talking to the people who help us source materials. We try to keep the old ways alive while making sure we have enough to send out to customers. It is a slow and steady process, and we like it that way. We just want to keep the traditions going without making things too complicated.
