Up here in Pathrahi, near Khutauna, the pace is very different from the big towns in Bihar. Madhubani is known for its art, but for us, it is just about the daily work. K D M Public School is surrounded by a lot of open space and fields. In the morning, you can see the fog rolling over the crops. Most students walk quite a distance to get here. We see them coming down the dirt paths with their bags. The school building is simple. We have basic classrooms with benches that have been around for a while. Sometimes the electricity goes out for hours, so we just open the windows and hope for a breeze. It is a quiet life. We know everyone's family, who their cousins are, and whose father is working away in the city. During harvest time, attendance drops a bit because families need help in the fields. We understand how it is. We are not trying to be some high-end institution. We are just here to give the kids a place to learn their numbers and letters. The staff room is small and we usually share our tiffins. There is a lot of local gossip about the rain or the price of seeds. It is an honest way to live. We just take it one day at a time and keep the gates open for everyone.
