People often ask how long we’ve been here at 455 in Rajeswari Nagar. To be honest, the years just kind of blend together when you’re working with metal every day. Madukkarai is where we set up shop because it’s close to where most of us live. It isn’t a fancy place with a lobby or air conditioning. Most days the floor is covered in scraps and the air smells like iron. We spend our mornings sorting through what came in the day before. Some of the machines we use are pretty old, and they make a lot of noise, but they get the job done right. If you walk past our spot, you’ll probably see a few of us out front moving heavy pieces around or just taking a quick tea break. We don’t have a big marketing department or anyone to write fancy brochures for us. It’s just a small crew making sure orders get filled. Sometimes the phone rings off the hook and other days it’s quiet enough to hear the birds outside. We deal with all sorts of people, from big contractors to guys just looking for a small piece of metal for a home project. We don’t treat anyone differently. It’s hard work, especially when the weather gets hot, but we like being part of the local scene here. That’s pretty much all there is to us.
