Thozhi Foundation

We’re located at 3/693 VPG Avenue Extension in Mettukuppam, which is over in the Thuraipakkam area. It’s a bit of a walk from the main road, but it’s a nice enough spot once you get here. We started this foundation because we wanted to have a place where women could just come and talk or get some help if they were stuck. It’s not a big, shiny building. It’s just a ground-floor space that we’ve filled with some old desks and chairs we found. Most of us who work here live just a few streets away, so we’re very much part of the local scene. We don’t have a lot of rules about how things are done. If someone comes in with a problem, we just sit down and try to figure it out together. Sometimes we’re helping with jobs, and other times it’s just about having a safe place to sit for an hour. It gets pretty hot in the afternoons, but we have a good fan that helps. We’re just regular people trying to look out for each other. We’ve been doing this for a while now and we don't plan on stopping anytime soon. It’s simple, honest work and it keeps us connected to what’s happening in our town. We just take things one day at a time here and hope for the best.
