Thirumugam Handlooms & Co.

We operate our handloom business out of Mgr Nagar in Gundumedu. This part of Thirumazhisai has a lot of history with weaving. We are over in the Bhupalwari area. It's not a factory with big machines. It’s more about the handwork and the looms that have been here for years. You can hear the rhythmic sound of the looms moving all day long. It's a sound we are very used to. We don't have a showroom with bright lights. Most of the work happens in the back where the thread is prepared and the weaving is done. The space is filled with the smell of cotton and dye. It gets quite warm in the afternoons, but the weavers just keep at it. We are a small group and we've been doing this for a long time. Thirumugam Handlooms & Co. is basically just us and our tools. We don't spend money on big ads or marketing. People who want real handloom work usually find their way to us in Gundumedu. The street outside is narrow and sometimes the delivery trucks have a hard time getting in. We just carry the bundles out to them. It's a slow process making things by hand, but that’s the way we have always done it here. It's just our daily routine in Bhupalwari. We work until the light fades and then we head home, ready to start again tomorrow.
