Althaf Craft Works

Althaf Craft Works is located at number 23 in Kodungaiyur. If you come by, you’ll probably hear us before you see us. The sound of chisels hitting wood is pretty constant throughout the day. The shop is old and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but it’s where we’ve done our work for a long time. There are piles of timber in the back and a few workbenches that have seen better days but are still sturdy. We don't use fancy computer programs to design things. We just draw them out on scraps of paper or right on the wood itself. The air in Kodungaiyur can get a bit humid, so we have a few fans going to keep the air moving while we sand down the edges. It’s hard work and your back usually hurts by the end of the shift. We are just a group of local guys who enjoy the process of turning a raw log into something useful. We don't have a showroom with bright lights. Most of what we make is just stacked up until it’s ready to go out. It’s a bit disorganized if you’re looking at it from the outside, but we know where every tool and every piece of wood is kept. We just keep doing what we do, day after day, in this same little corner.
