Our place is out on the road that goes from NH4 to Athivakkam, specifically at number 112 in Singadivakkam Village. It is a bit of a drive to get out here in the Kancheepuram district. We build cabins. Not the kind you live in, but the steel driver cabins you see on big construction machines and farm tractors. It is heavy engineering work and the shop floor is quite big. It stays very hot because of the Tamil Nadu sun and all the welding going on inside. We have a lot of people from the nearby villages working with us. You will see the metal frames being welded and the safety glass being fitted into place. It is a serious operation but it feels like a local shop. We do not use big words to talk about our work. We just make sure the guy driving a tractor or a crane has a safe and sturdy place to sit while he works. The road outside can get very dusty with all the trucks passing by. We deal with a lot of metal sheets and heavy paint. It is a long day for everyone, starting right when the sun comes up. We focus on getting the dimensions exactly right so the cabins fit onto the machines without any gaps. Sometimes we have visitors from the city, but mostly it is just us and the machines. We have been at this spot for a long time.
