Living and working in Jhinkpani at the Chaibasa Cement Works is something you just get used to after a while. It's a big part of the District West Singhbhum area, and most of us have been coming here for a long time. The air always has that smell of ground stone, and the machines never really stop humming in the background of everything we do. It gets loud, especially when the big grinders are going, but that's just how a cement plant works. We spend most of our time checking the kilns or making sure the bags are moving along the line like they should be. Some of the guys have worked here since their fathers retired from the same spots years ago. The roads around the works are a bit rough, and the trucks leave deep tracks in the dirt every time it rains. We don't have a lot of fancy stuff in the breakroom, just a few wooden benches and a kettle that takes forever to boil for tea. It’s a lot of sweat and dust, and by the end of the shift, everyone is ready to head home and wash off the grey grit from their skin. Sometimes we have to stay late if a machine breaks down, which happens more than we’d like honestly. It’s just how it goes in a place this old. We don’t really do much talking, we just focus on the day and get the cement out.
