Down in Lakhopur, Nalbari, a group of us got together to form Khetridharmapur Organic Farmers Producer Company Limited. Bapukan Barman is the one who helps keep things organized at his place. We’ve all been farming in this area for as long as we can remember. Lately, we've been trying to stick to organic ways of doing things. It isn't always easy because you have to be much more careful with the dirt and the water. If one thing goes wrong, it can mess up the whole patch. We meet up pretty regularly to swap stories about what’s working and what isn’t. Some days are long, starting before the sun is even up properly. We don't have any fancy machines doing the work for us; it’s mostly just our hands and a lot of patience. Dealing with all the paperwork for a company was a bit of a headache at first, but we’re learning as we go. It’s better than trying to do everything alone. When the harvest comes in, things get real busy around here. You’ll see trucks and cycles moving back and forth all day. We try to keep things simple and honest. If a crop fails, it fails, and we just try again next time. That’s just how it goes with farming. It’s a quiet life for the most part, but we like it that way and we plan to keep at it.
