United Rope Works

United Rope Works has been at 29 Strand Road for a long time. We’re on the first floor of Mohta House. If you know Kolkata, you know Strand Road is always a chaotic place with the river nearby and all the commercial activity. Being in an old building like Mohta House has its own charm, even if the stairs are a bit steep and the ceilings are high. We deal with ropes of all kinds. Jute, nylon, thick ones for ships, and thinner ones for everyday use. The smell of the fibers is the first thing you notice when you walk into our space. It’s a very traditional business in its own way. We have old wooden desks and ledgers that we still use alongside the computers. There’s always someone coming in to check the quality of a coil or to talk over prices. We don’t do much in the way of modern branding. We just know our ropes. Most of our day is spent talking to suppliers or checking the stock in the back. The fans hum overhead, and we can hear the horns of the trucks outside all day long. It’s a noisy, busy environment, but we’re used to it. We’ve been part of this market for generations, and we just keep doing what we know best without any fancy talk or complicated systems. It’s just about getting good rope to the people who need it.
