S R Steels is located right on M G Mahimtura Marg, near the 3rd Kumbharwada Road in JP Nagar. If you know this area, you know it’s the heart of the metal and scrap trade. It’s a very busy, very old part of the city where every shop is packed to the ceiling with metal parts. We fit right in there. Our day starts early, trying to beat some of the traffic and getting the shutters up. The air is always full of the smell of metal and the sound of hammers. It’s not a place for someone who likes peace and quiet. We deal with steel in various forms and it’s a very physical job. We don't have a lot of space for an office, so most of our business happens right on the street or in the small doorway of the shop. We’ve been part of this community for a long time. We know the other shop owners and we know how the market fluctuates. We don't use any fancy systems; it’s mostly just paper and a lot of memory. People come to us because they know we’ve been here forever and we understand the local trade. It’s a tough life but it’s what we’ve always done. We don't try to dress it up. It’s just a steel shop in a crowded market, doing what we can to keep going day after day. It is noisy and dirty, but it is our livelihood.
