I spend most of my day sitting in the passenger seat of a small car with an extra brake pedal under my feet. Our office is at No. 1548, one of those Bda Shops, and it’s basically just a small room where we keep the paperwork and the car keys. People show up nervous, clutching their learner’s permits, and we head out into the street. It’s a lot of patience. You have to explain the clutch and the gears over and over again until it finally clicks for them. Some people pick it up fast, and others take weeks just to stop stalling at the red light. The shop is a good meeting point, though it’s nothing special to look at. We keep a few chairs for people waiting their turn. Most of the time, I’m checking the oil or making sure the tires are okay for the next lesson. Traffic around here can be a real headache, especially in the evenings when everyone is trying to get home. We just take it slow. I’ve seen all kinds of drivers come through here, from teenagers who think they’re racers to older folks who are finally getting around to learning. It’s honest work. The car has some scratches on the bumpers, but that’s expected when you’re teaching. We just stay at the BDA shop until the last student is done for the day.
