Hotel Kadamba

We open the doors early in Bapuji Nagar, usually before the sun gets too high. Street Number 4 stays pretty quiet until about eight in the morning when people start moving around. At Hotel Kadamba, we spend a lot of time just keeping the place tidy. There is always a floor to mop or a table that needs a wipe down because dust comes in from the road. Most of us have worked here for a while now. We know where every light switch and every spare key is kept. The building is older, but it holds up okay. The ceiling in the lobby has a small stain where the water leaked last year, but we've patched it up now. During the day, we see a mix of travelers and local folks just passing through New Janta Nagar. Some stay for a night and others just want a quick rest. We don't do anything fancy here. It is just a regular place where you can get a room and have a seat. Sometimes the plumbing acts up or a light bulb flickers out, and we have to fix it right away. My favorite time is late afternoon when the shadows get long on the street. It feels like the whole neighborhood slows down for a bit. We keep the ledger on the front desk and check people in as they come. It’s mostly routine work, but it keeps us busy from morning until late at night when we finally lock the main doors.
