Maa Handicrafts

We are out here in Thumkati village, which is quite a ways into the Canning area. It gets pretty quiet sometimes, except for when everyone is busy working on the different items we make. My family has been doing this for a long time, just sitting together and putting things together by hand. The weather in South 24 Parganas can be a bit much, especially during the rains when the roads get muddy, but we keep the work going inside. It’s not a big factory or anything fancy, just a few rooms where we keep all the materials and finished pieces. Most days start early before the sun gets too hot. You can hear the sounds of the village while we work. People from the nearby areas sometimes stop by to see what’s new. We don’t have any big signs or bright lights, just the address in Canning where people know to find us. It’s hard work, especially on the eyes when the light isn’t great, but it’s what we know. There are always piles of stuff waiting to be finished or packed up. Sometimes the transport takes a while to get here because of where we are located. We just try to get things done as they come. It’s a simple life here, just making things and hoping they get to where they need to go without too much trouble. Anyway, that’s basically what happens at Maa Handicrafts every day.
