If you find yourself near Lal Baba Ashram in Birudiha, you’ll likely see our place. India Engineering Company is tucked away right there in the Panagarh Bazar area. It is a noisy part of town because of all the trucks and the market nearby. Our building is nothing special to look at, just a sturdy structure that has seen a lot of years. Inside, it’s mostly just us working with heavy parts and trying to keep the machines running smooth. The dust from the road blows in sometimes, so we spend a fair bit of time sweeping. Panagarh can get dusty, especially during the dry months. We’ve been here long enough that the local shopkeepers know us by name. We don't do much talking; mostly we just focus on the engineering tasks that come our way. Sometimes people stop by just to ask for directions to the Ashram, and we help them out. The lighting inside is a bit dim in the corners, but we have lamps over the workbenches where the real work happens. It’s a lot of manual labor and getting our hands dirty. We eat our lunch together in the small break area behind the main floor. There’s no air conditioning, just a couple of big industrial fans that move the air around. It is a honest living and we’ve been part of this bazar for quite a while now. It's just how the days go by here in Birudiha.
