So, we are located out in Madanpur, specifically in the Tola area where everyone mostly knows each other by face. My name is on the paperwork, but really it is just a few of us here at Jai Maa Sevari Flour Mill. Most mornings start quite early because the sun gets so hot here in Aurangabad by noon and nobody wants to be hauling heavy bags in that heat. If you walk past the village school and head toward the panchayat office, you can usually hear the motor humming from a distance. It is a loud, steady sound that we have all gotten used to over the months. Sometimes the electricity cuts out without warning and everything goes silent, so we just sit outside on the plastic chairs and wait for it to come back. Manju Devi and Ram Oravesh are usually around making sure the bags are stacked right so they do not fall over in the corner. The floor is always covered in a thin layer of white dust no matter how much we sweep it up at the end of the shift. It gets into your hair and on your clothes, but that is just how it is working with flour every day. We spend a lot of time just moving sacks from the truck to the back room and then back out again once the grinding is done. It is not fancy work, but it keeps us busy and the village needs it. We do not have a big office, just the machines and grain.
