Karthi Rice Mill

The mill is situated at 163/1B2 on Chinthamani Main Road in Rajman Nagar. Karthi Rice Mill has been here for years, and it is a very busy place during the harvest seasons. When the hulling machines are running, you can hear them from down the road. The air always has that dusty, sweet smell of raw paddy and rice husks. We spend our days receiving loads of grain from local farmers and processing it so it is ready for the market. The floors are usually covered in a thin layer of grain dust, no matter how much we try to clean up. We have a small corner where we keep the ledger books and a wooden table for talking to customers. It is a simple setup without any modern frills. The workers are all local men who know how to handle the heavy bags and keep the machinery greased. Sometimes a belt breaks or a motor gets stuck, and we have to stop everything to fix it ourselves. It is a lot of hard, physical labor, and the heat under the tin roof can be intense in the afternoons. We just focus on getting the rice cleaned and bagged up properly for the families and shops that buy from us. It is a steady way of life and we have been doing it this way for a long time.
