Desai Cottex

Desai Cottex. We are located right near the 66 Kv substation. It is a big landmark, so nobody ever gets lost trying to find us. The main thing you notice when you walk into our place is the cotton. There are bits of it floating in the air and stuck to everything. It’s like a thin layer of snow sometimes. We handle a lot of raw cotton here. We have big machines that process it and bale it up. The sound is quite loud, like a constant thumping that you eventually stop hearing. The floor is concrete and we have to sweep it several times a day to keep the fluff from piling up too high. Our office is just a small room at the front with a glass window so we can see the floor. We have a heavy wooden table where we do the accounts and talk to the farmers or drivers. It gets very hot during the summer, but the high ceilings help a little bit. We keep a water cooler in the shade for everyone. Most of the people working here have been with us for years. We know the cycles of the season and when to expect the most work. It is a simple operation and we don't try to make it look like anything else. Just a lot of cotton and hard work near the power station.
