Out here in Village Heerapurhusanpur, things move at a much slower pace. Aligarh Potato Seed Producer Company Limited is basically just a group of us working out of the village at Mati Basi. If you ask for Chandan Singh’s place, the local people can point you the right way. We spend all day looking at potato seeds and sorting through the harvest. It is dirty work, especially when the ground gets wet after a storm. We do not have a big office building or a paved parking lot. Most of our stuff happens in the sheds or right out in the dirt fields. Potatoes are what we know best. We sort them by hand, bag them, and move them onto the transport. Sometimes the harvest is great, and sometimes we have to work twice as hard for half the result. That is just the way farming goes in Uttar Pradesh. The roads out to Heerapurhusanpur can be a bit rough after a heavy rain, so we spend time fixing the path too. We don’t have a marketing team or any fancy logos on our shirts. It is just local people who have been around potatoes their whole lives. The air smells like earth and old tractors. We sit around on plastic chairs during our lunch break and talk about the next planting season. It is a simple life and it keeps us busy from dawn till dusk most days.
