Our spot is right on Makrana Road, which is basically the heart of the stone trade around here. You can’t drive two minutes without seeing another marble yard, but we’ve been at this particular location for a good while. The main thing you notice when you walk in is the white dust. It covers the trees, the fences, and our trucks. We spend our days sorting through the blocks that come in and figuring out which ones are worth cutting into slabs. It’s a lot of physical labor, using crowbars and rollers to nudge things into place. The sun beats down on the open yard, so we drink a lot of tea in the shade when we get a break. People come from all over to find stone here because of the reputation of the road, so we’re usually busy talking to drivers or checking inventory. It’s not a glamorous job. My hands are rough from handling the raw edges of the marble, and the noise from the polishers can be a bit much. We don't have a big corporate team or anything. It's just us and the machines, making sure the stone is ready for whoever is buying. We stay until the last truck is loaded, often after the sun starts to go down. It’s just how the work goes on Makrana Road, day in and day out, year after year. We keep the machines running and the yard stocked as best we can.
