Dhanraj Jain Bahiwala is basically just a place where we keep the old ways of bookkeeping alive. We are located right here, and if you walk in, you’ll see stacks of those traditional red books and ledgers everywhere. It’s a bit of a dusty environment because of all the paper, but it’s a familiar smell to us. A lot of shopkeepers still like writing things down by hand rather than using a computer for everything, and that’s why we stay busy. We spend our mornings sorting through stock and talking to people who have been coming to us for years. It’s not a high-tech operation. We have a few old wooden desks and some stools for when people want to sit and look through the different sizes of bahi books we have. My family has been doing this kind of thing for a long time, so it’s just what we know. We don’t spend money on big signs or anything. Most people find us because they know the name or they saw the shop while walking past. Sometimes the traffic outside gets loud, but inside it stays pretty quiet. We just focus on getting the paper quality right and making sure the binding on the books is strong enough to last a whole year of accounts. It’s steady work. We open early and stay until the evening, just like everyone else around here, handling the books that people rely on.
