Prince General Store

Prince General Store is tucked away in Chhoti Basti near Mahadav Chowk here in Pushkar. It is a quiet enough spot most of the time except when the bikes roar past the intersection. We stock basic things like cooking oil, shampoo sachets, and different kinds of lentils. The shop is small and it smells a bit like incense and spices mixed together. We spend a lot of time unpacking crates that arrive on the rickshaws. Sometimes the glass jars on the counter get fingerprints all over them from the kids looking at the candy inside. We try to keep everything organized but it’s hard when you are working alone and have three people asking for different things at once. The light inside isn't the brightest so we usually leave the front shutter wide open to let the daylight in. We have a small bench outside where some of the older men sit and chat for a bit while they wait for their wives to finish shopping. It feels like a small community hub more than just a place to buy things. We have to be careful about the monkeys in Pushkar because they sometimes try to grab things from the front display if we aren't looking. It is just a simple general store and we take things one day at a time. There is always a list of things we need to order for the next week to keep the shelves from looking empty.
