Om Prakash General Store

Om Prakash General Store is right in the middle of the Vijay Nagar Subji Mandi in Vijainagar. If you come here in the morning, it is a completely different world. The whole area is full of vegetable sellers and people haggling over prices. Our shop is where people come to get the things they can't find from the vegetable vendors, like cooking oil, spices, or soap to wash up with after they get home. It is very loud and crowded, especially before ten in the morning. I usually have to dodge crates of tomatoes just to get to my own front door. The shop itself is quite old and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we are too busy to worry about that right now. We have sacks of flour and sugar stacked near the entrance. I spend a lot of my time answering questions about prices because they seem to change every week. When the market starts to wind down in the afternoon, things get a bit more relaxed and I can finally sit down and have a cup of tea. The floor always has a bit of straw or vegetable scraps that get tracked in from the market outside, so I sweep it out three or four times a day. It’s a rough and tumble sort of place, but it’s honest work and we like being right in the heart of the action in the mandi.
