Mateshwari General Store

Mateshwari General Store is located right on the Brahma Mandir Road which is a very busy part of Pushkar. There are always people walking by and the sound of bells and traffic is constant. We carry all the usual items like bottled water, snacks, and toiletries that travelers might need. The shop space is quite narrow so we have to be smart about where we put the bigger sacks of flour and sugar. We spend a lot of our morning just sweeping out the sand and dirt that gets kicked up from the road. It is a lot of standing around and waiting but then suddenly five people will walk in at the same time. We don't have any fancy computers so everything is done by hand. Sometimes we run out of change and have to go to the shop next door to ask for some. The shelves are made of simple wood and they are packed tight with all sorts of jars and boxes. We have a small fan that wobbles a bit but it helps when the afternoon heat gets really bad. It is a bit chaotic sometimes with all the noise outside but we like being in the middle of everything. We just try to keep the basics in stock so no one has to go too far to find what they need for their kitchen or their daily life. It’s hard work but it is what we do every day for the locals.
