Our shop, Laxmi Sweets, is located in the middle of Nala Bazar. It’s a busy area and there’s always something going on outside our door. We open up pretty early because that’s when the fresh milk comes in and we need to start boiling it down. If you walk past in the morning, you can usually smell the sugar and the cardamom. We don't have a big fancy menu or anything. We just stick to the basic stuff that we know how to make well. The building itself is old, so we’re always fixing something or painting a wall. It’s not a perfect place, but it’s where we work. Most of our customers are locals who live nearby or work in the other shops in Nala Bazar. They stop by for a chat and a small box of whatever is fresh that day. We don’t really do any advertising. People just know we’re here. Sometimes we run out of things by the afternoon, and we just tell people to come back tomorrow. That’s just the way it is. We use our hands for most of the work, and it’s tiring, but we’re used to it. The floor is concrete and the counters are wooden. It’s a simple setup for a simple business. We just want to get through the day, make sure everything is clean, and head home to our families at night.
