Khandelwal Sweets

Our shop is located at Madar Gate, which is one of the busiest spots you can imagine. Khandelwal Sweets has been here for years. It’s a simple setup with rows of sweets in the glass counters. We start the fire in the back kitchen before the sun is even up. Making these sweets takes a lot of patience and some strong arms for stirring the milk. We don't use a lot of fancy advertising because everyone who walks through Madar Gate sees us anyway. The shop isn't very large, but we make do with the space we have. There’s usually a bit of a crowd around tea time. We keep things pretty traditional. My brother and I manage the counter and we have two guys helping in the kitchen. It’s dusty outside sometimes because of the traffic, so we are always wiping the glass down. We don't have a big mission or a fancy philosophy. We just want to make sure the sweets are fresh and the customers are treated like neighbors. Some days are long, especially when there’s a festival, but we don't mind. It’s a good living. You get to know all the other shopkeepers around here too. We are just a regular part of the street, serving the same stuff we’ve made for a long time now. We don't change the recipes because people like them the way they are. That is just how we do things at Madar Gate.
