Gopal Krishan Misthan Bhandar

Foy Sagar Road is a long stretch, and we’ve been here at Gopal Krishan Misthan Bhandar for a good while now. The address says Foy Sagar Road twice on our papers, which always makes me laugh a little when I see it written down. It’s a straightforward kind of place. We don't have fancy lights or big signs. Most people know where we are anyway. We spend a lot of time in the back. That's where the real work happens with the stoves and the big iron pans. The heat back there is something else, especially in the summer months. We make the usual stuff—jalebis in the morning, different types of barfi and laddoos later on. The smell stays on your clothes all day. Sometimes I go home and my wife says I smell like a sweet shop, which I guess is true. We have a small counter and a few glass jars for the snacks. It’s not a big operation. We just try to get the milk and sugar right. If the milk is good, the sweets are good. That’s the main thing we worry about every morning. The road outside gets pretty dusty with all the bikes and cars, so we’re constantly wiping the glass. It’s a bit of a battle, but you have to do it. People stop by on their way home. We have our regulars who come at the same time every day. It’s a simple life for us on Foy Sagar Road.
