Deepak Sweet Mart

Deepak Sweet Mart sits over by Delhi Gate. It’s an old part of the city, and you can see the history in the buildings all around us. The gate is a landmark that everyone knows, so it makes finding us pretty easy for anyone new to the area. We open up early because that’s when the milk arrives. The morning air is usually a bit cooler, which is the best time to get the heavy cooking started. Our shop is straightforward. We have the counters, the scales, and the stacks of cardboard boxes for packing things up. We don’t really go in for big speeches or polished brochures. We just show up and make the sweets. You’ll often find us busy in the back where the actual making happens. The noise from the traffic near Delhi Gate is something you just stop noticing after a few weeks of working here. Customers come from all over, some just passing through and others who live right around the corner. We see a lot of different people every day. Some are in a huge hurry, and some like to chat for a minute while we tie the string around their box. The shop isn't perfect; maybe the paint is peeling a bit in the corner, but it’s an honest place. We do our best to keep things clean and the trays full. It’s a long day, but it’s what we know how to do.
