Deepak General Store

At Deepak General Store, we are right by the Roopangarh Phatak in Kishangarh. The sound of the trains is something you just get used to after a while. Every time the gate closes, a crowd of people gathers outside. Some of them come into the shop to buy a bottle of water or some tobacco while they wait for the tracks to clear. It’s a busy little spot. We keep the usual stuff, like matches, candles, and bags of snacks. The shelves are mostly filled with plastic containers of different sizes. I spend my afternoons re-stocking the shelves or checking the dates on the milk packets. It’s not a very big shop, so we have to be smart about where we put things. The floor is made of old cement and it’s seen a lot of feet over the years. Kishangarh can get very hot in the summer, so the shade from our small awning is a popular spot for people to stand. We don’t have fancy displays. We just put the goods out where people can see them. Most of our customers are locals who live just a few streets away. They know my name and I know theirs. It’s a simple business. We don't have any big plans to expand or anything. We just want to keep the shop running and make sure the tea and sugar are always available when the trains stop the traffic.
