Over at Jai Engineering, things stay pretty grounded. We are situated in Bhagwan Ganj New Basti, which is more of a quiet, residential-turning-commercial kind of neighborhood. Our workshop has that smell of cut metal and machine oil that you never really get out of your clothes. It’s a small space, mostly filled with the lathes and the tools we use every single day. The floor is concrete and has a few cracks in it from over the years. We started out with just a couple of machines, and even though we’ve added more, the place still feels a bit cramped. You can usually find us hunched over a workbench or talking to a local guy who needs a part fixed for his tractor or a small machine. We don’t have a big sign or anything fancy, just the name on the door and the work we do. In the rainy season, the road outside gets a bit muddy, so we spend a lot of time mopping the floor to keep the grit away from the precision tools. We take our time with things because rushing usually leads to mistakes, and in engineering, you can't really afford that. We eat our lunch together on a small wooden table in the corner, usually talking about something other than work. It’s a basic life, but it’s honest work and the people around New Basti seem to appreciate having us nearby when things break. The neighbors sometimes stop by just to borrow a wrench or chat for a minute.
