Al-Habib Sweet Mart

You can find us at Al-Habib Sweet Mart right in Nala Bazar. It’s a narrow street and always crowded with people shopping for clothes or groceries. We focus on a few things we do well. The smell of frying oil and sweet syrup fills the air around our shop. I start working around six in the morning to get the first batches ready. We have a small back room where we store the sacks of sugar and flour. It’s a bit cramped but we make it work. I’ve been working with the same two guys for years. We don't talk much, we just know what needs to be done. One handles the frying and I do the sugar coating. The trays on the counter get emptied pretty fast during the evening rush. We have a lot of people who stop by on their way home from work to pick up something for their kids. The glass on the display case is a bit cracked in the corner but it’s still solid. I use an old scale to weigh the sweets. It’s not digital, just the old metal weights. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to use candles, which makes the shop look very different. It’s a simple business. We don't do any delivery or anything like that. You just come to the bazaar and find us. That’s enough for us.
