Our factory is situated at Kailash Mod in the Sikandra Nallur area, which is part of the Ponneri Tk in Thiruvallur district. It’s a bit of a trek to get out here, but there is plenty of space for the machines. At Chotu And Prabhath Plastic Udyog, the air usually smells like warm plastic and the sound of the molding units is quite loud. We have a big shed where we keep the raw pellets in heavy sacks. The floor is concrete and can get very hot during the summer months in Tamil Nadu. We don't have any fancy offices; mostly we just have a small plastic table and a few chairs in the corner where we handle the paperwork. Most of the staff lives nearby, so we see each other around the village even when we aren't at work. The trucks come in through the gate at odd hours to pick up the crates of finished goods. We spend a lot of time checking the molds and making sure the water cooling system isn't clogged up. It’s hard work and your hands get dirty by noon, but that’s just how the udyog runs. We usually take a long break in the afternoon when the heat is at its worst. Then we work late into the evening when it’s a bit cooler to finish the batches. Sometimes the power fluctuates and we have to restart the whole line, which is frustrating but part of the job.
