Dawar Footwear Industries is at the 12. 5 Km mark on the Agra Delhi Road in Sikandra, right near the Bapu Ashram. Being out here means we have a bit more space than we would in the city center, which helps with the machines. Our place is mostly about the smell of leather and glue. It’s a workshop environment through and through. We’ve got the machines running most of the day, so it’s never really quiet in here. It’s a practical location for getting materials in and finished shoes out to the road. The Bapu Ashram is a good landmark because otherwise, people sometimes miss our turnoff. We don't have a fancy lobby or a receptionist. Usually, you just walk in and find one of us working near the back or checking the stock. We make a lot of shoes, and it’s honest, tiring work. The floors are usually covered in scraps of material, but we try to sweep up at the end of every day. It’s a local business and we’ve been in Sikandra for a long time now. Many of the people working here live just down the road in the local neighborhood. It’s not a high-tech factory; it’s more about people who know how to put a shoe together. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait a bit, but we just use that time for a break. We just focus on making footwear that holds up well for the people who buy it.
