Kanakadurga Poultry Farm

The farm is out at Sy. No. 169/B and 170 A in Venkatapuram, which is part of Thorrur. It’s a bit of a drive from the main road, but that’s better for the birds anyway. Kanakadurga Poultry Farm isn't a quiet place; there’s always the sound of chickens and the smell of feed in the air. I spend a lot of time walking between the sheds, checking the water lines and making sure everything is running okay. It’s a lot of physical work, especially when the weather changes and we have to adjust the ventilation. My boots are usually covered in dirt from the paths. We have some help from the local village kids who want to earn a bit of money on the weekends. It’s a 24-hour job really, because the animals don't care if it's Sunday or a holiday. I keep my notes in a greasy notebook I carry in my pocket. The sheds are old but they hold up well enough against the rain. We don't have any fancy marketing. Most people just know where we are and come by the farm gate when they need something. The road out here gets muddy during the monsoon, so we have to be careful not to get the truck stuck in the ruts. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to scramble to get the generator going. It’s just part of the daily grind. I wouldn't know what to do with myself in a quiet office.
