Balu Pindi Girni

Balu Pindi Girni is situated at H.No 5-81 in Chinnayellapur, which is part of the Gudur area in Warangal. Our business is quite simple: we grind grain into flour. The sound of the girni, or the flour mill, is something you can hear from down the street when we are working. It is a loud, steady rhythmic noise that fills the whole building. We spend our days lifting heavy sacks of wheat, maize, and rice that people bring from their homes or farms. The air inside the shop is always a bit dusty with a fine white powder that settles on our hair and clothes by noon. We have to keep the stones in the mill sharp so the flour comes out fine and not coarse. People usually wait around for their turn, sitting on the wooden bench outside or leaning against the wall, talking about the weather or the local news. We don't have a computer or any high-tech systems here. We just weigh the grain, grind it, and put the fresh, warm flour back into the bags. The smell of freshly ground grain is something you never really get tired of, even after years of doing this. It is a dusty and noisy job, but it is necessary for everyone in the village who wants to make their own rotis and bread. We stay open until the last customer is served, usually as the sun is starting to go down over Warangal.
