Our shop, Varalaxmi Kiranam, is right in the middle of Labour Colony in Warangal. The house number is 11-1-208. It’s a small kirana store where we sell the basics like dal, rice, soap, and snacks. Most of our customers live just a few houses away. It’s a busy neighborhood and there’s always someone walking by or stopping in for a quick item they forgot at the market. I spend most of my day standing behind the wooden counter. My wife helps me out when the crowd gets too big in the evenings. We know most of the kids around here because they come in for sweets after school. The shelves are packed tight because we try to fit in as much as we can. It’s not a fancy supermarket with air conditioning. We just have a couple of fans and the front door stays open all day. Sometimes we run out of things and I have to go pick up more stock on my scooter. It’s a simple life, but we like being part of the colony. We’ve been here for years and have seen the neighborhood change quite a bit. There is always a lot of noise from the street, but you get used to it. We just try to keep enough stock so that no one goes home empty-handed. It is just a local shop for local people who need their daily supplies without traveling too far.
