Veeranna Pindi Girni

This is the flour mill at 1-58 in Jangilikonda. Veeranna has been running things here, and if you come by, you’ll likely see a thin layer of white flour dust on just about everything, including our clothes. That’s just part of working a pindi girni. People from all over the village bring their bags of grain, sometimes on their shoulders or on the back of a cycle. We spend the whole day pouring that grain into the machines and watching it come out as fresh flour. The sound is a steady roar that you get used to after a while, though it makes talking to each other a bit difficult without shouting. We have to keep the stones sharp and the belts tight so the grind is just right. It’s a dusty, loud environment, but there is something satisfying about seeing the bags get filled up for the local families. Jangilikonda is a small place, so we know most of the faces that walk through the door. We don't have any big signs or complicated systems. You just bring your stuff, wait your turn, and we get it done. The heat from the machines adds up during the afternoon, but we just keep the doors open to catch whatever breeze comes through. It’s honest work that needs doing every single day because people always need their flour for their meals at home. We just stay here and keep the machinery running for whoever needs us.
