In the village of Vuyyalawada, our group meets up at our small place to handle our daily tasks. We are a self-help group, which basically means a bunch of us from the neighborhood got together to work on our own. It’s very quiet here compared to the big cities. You can hear the birds and the occasional tractor going by. We don’t have a big factory or anything like that. It’s more like a shared room where we sit and do our work. Most of us have our own chores at home, so we come here during the hours we have free. We talk about our families and the village news while we work on our products. It’s a very informal way of doing things. If someone’s kid is sick, they stay home, and we just pick up the slack. There’s no boss watching over our shoulders. We just know what needs to be done to earn a bit for our households. The room gets a bit crowded when everyone shows up at once, and we often have to move stuff to the porch to have space to sit. We use simple tools and do a lot by hand. It’s not a fast process, but we take our time. It feels more like a gathering of friends than a business most of the time, which is how we like it.
