Working at Sri Lakshitha Colours on Medi Street means you are going to get a bit of dye on your clothes sooner or later. Our shop at number 596 is right in the middle of things here in Aruppukottai. It is a narrow street, so it gets pretty tight when the delivery vans try to squeeze past each other. Inside, the shelves are packed with bags and boxes of all different shades. You can see the dust from the pigments floating in the light coming through the door. We have been sitting behind this same wooden counter for years, and it is worn smooth in the places where people lean their elbows. The floor has stains from every color you can imagine, like a map of all the work we have done over the seasons. We don't have a fancy computer system for everything; a lot of it is still done with a pen and a pad of paper. Local weavers come in and out all day, usually looking for something specific for their looms. We know most of them by name and they know us. It is a hot town, and the shop stays warm, but we have a big jug of water and a small fan to keep us going. There is no point in trying to look corporate when you are covered in blue or red powder by lunchtime. It is just honest work and we keep at it every single day.
