We operate out of No. 1 Kes Godown Street. It is exactly what it sounds like, a street full of warehouses. The buildings are old and made of heavy stone and brick. At Tmmr Rathinasamy Nadar Company, the work is mostly about moving heavy bags and checking inventory. It’s a lot of physical labor. You get used to the smell of jute and old wood. The light inside the godown is a bit grainy. We have big heavy doors that we slide open every morning. It takes two people sometimes if the track is stuck. We don't have any fancy computers doing the work for us. Most things are written down in ledgers with a pen. It’s how we've always done it. The street outside is narrow. When a truck comes in, everything else has to stop. We shout to each other over the noise of the engines. We take our breaks sitting on the steps or on some crates. The water from the cooler is usually the best thing about the afternoon. We don't have a website or any big advertisements. People find us because we’ve been here at this address for a long time. It’s a straightforward way to earn a living. We load the goods, we check the weight, and we send them on their way. It’s a long day, but it feels good to close the doors at night.
