Our place is out in Aviyur, which is in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. Sundram Fasteners Ltd. has been here for a good bit. The pin code is 626115 if you’re looking for us on a map. It’s a bit of a drive from the main city areas, so it’s quieter here than in Chennai or Madurai. We make a lot of small parts, mostly fasteners and bolts. You wouldn’t think making bolts would be so complicated, but there’s a lot to keep track of. The factory floor is pretty big and it gets very warm in the afternoons. We have a lot of workers from the nearby villages who come in on cycles or buses. It’s a local crowd. We don't do much in the way of fancy events. Most of the time it’s just the sound of the machines clicking away. Sometimes a machine breaks down and we have to wait for parts, which is frustrating, but we manage. The canteen food is okay, mostly rice and sambar, which keeps everyone going. We aren’t really interested in being some big corporate entity; we just focus on getting the crates packed and loaded onto the trucks. It’s a simple life out here in Aviyur. We do our shifts, go home, and come back the next day to do it again because the work never really stops.
