Gayatri Metal Works

We are located in Ramu Compound on Chandansar Road. If you know the Virar East side, you know it’s a bit of a trek from the main station. Gayatri Metal Works has been in this same spot for quite a long time now. It’s a noisy place because of the machines and the metal. You get used to the sound of grinding and hammering after a while. The roof has a small leak when the monsoon hits hard, but we just move the stuff out of the way. We aren't doing anything very fancy here. It’s just straightforward work with our hands and the old equipment. The air always has that smell of grease and burnt metal. Most of the guys working here live nearby in Virar, so we often walk part of the way together after we close up. Sometimes we have to stay late to finish a job, and the compound gets very quiet then. We have one old pedestal fan that rattles more than it blows air. Chandansar Road is always crowded in the mornings. There’s a small cart near the entrance that sells vada pav, and that’s usually our lunch. We’ve watched the buildings go up all around us. It used to be just open space. Our unit is small and a bit cluttered with scrap in the corners. We just keep our heads down and get the work done. It’s a basic life but we enjoy it.
