Olive Tree School

Olive Tree School is situated at No 1 on Kamarajar Street in Vikkarapandi Tk, near Anniyur. It’s a bit of a drive out into Villupuram, so it feels more like a village school than a city one. The air is a bit clearer here, but the dust from the road still finds its way into the classrooms. We have a few trees around the perimeter which helps with the shade. The building is a single story and we’ve had to patch up the roof a couple of times. Most of us working here are from the nearby villages, so we know the parents and what their lives are like. It isn't a place with fancy gadgets or expensive uniforms. We just focus on the books and making sure the children learn to read and write properly. The walk to the school is through a lot of green patches, and you can hear the birds in the morning before the kids arrive. We keep a simple routine. The bell rings, we have the morning assembly, and then everyone goes to their rooms. It’s honest work and we don’t spend money on big ads or anything. People just know we are here on Kamarajar Street. If someone wants to talk to us, they just walk through the gate and find one of the staff members sitting in the shade or near the office door. We are just here doing our part for the local families.
