If you head over to H G College in Bijapur, you'll find us tucked inside the Sj Dance Class area. It’s a bit of a shared space, so you might hear music from one side while we are doing our karate drills on the other. This isn't one of those high-tech gyms you see on TV. We just have the floor space and the uniforms. People from around Sindagi come here to learn how to kick and punch properly. Most of the students are just local kids whose parents want them to have something to do after their regular school is done. The mats get a bit worn out from all the footwork, but they do the job. We spend a lot of time on the basics, just going over the same moves until they look right. It gets pretty hot in here during the summer months in Karnataka, but we just keep the fans going and carry on. There isn't much talking during the sessions because everyone is trying to remember the katas. Sometimes we have to remind the younger ones to stay focused when they start staring out the window. It is a simple setup for anyone interested in martial arts without any of the extra drama. You just show up, put on your white belt, and start practicing like everyone else did when they first started coming here. We don't worry about being fancy; we just focus on the movements and the training every single evening.
