Down here on Nayanair Street in Melpudupet, things move at a bit of a slower pace than the big cities. We are in the North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu. Our building is simple, nestled among the other local shops and houses. Most of our work involves coordinating with builders and homeowners from the surrounding villages. We have piles of tile samples everywhere. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes, but we know where everything is. The air can get quite humid, so we keep the fans going all day long. We mostly speak the local language with everyone who stops by. It’s a very grounded kind of life here. We aren't trying to be anything we're not. We just supply the materials people need to build their floors and walls. Sometimes the shipments take a while to reach us from the main factory, so we have to explain the delays to our customers. They are usually understanding since they know how the roads are around here. We spend our breaks sitting outside for a bit of air. It’s a small operation, just a few of us making sure the orders are correct and the accounts are settled. We’ve been here long enough that we feel like a staple of Nayanair Street. It’s just honest work in a quiet part of the state.
